Updates from the Irish Section of the Nutrition Society

Member Led Meeting (MLM) on Nutrition Misinformation

A Member Led Meeting (MLM) on Nutrition Misinformation took place on 27th November 2025 at the Spencer Dock hotel. This was a joint initiative between NutriPD, the INDI, Safefood and Irish Section, led by Dr Lisa Ryan and Dr Aileen McGloin on the Irish Section committee, and the Irish section express their sincere thanks to the UK office for supporting the event. The meeting was extremely well-received and well-attended, and details were widely shared across social media including LinkedIn. The talks were recorded and have now been made available on the Nutrition Science Hub, so you can watch them back there. Also, watch this space as a follow-up event is being planned for 2026.

Welcome new committee members

We said goodbye to our Membership secretary, Dr Marianne Walsh, and to our ordinary member Dr Trish Heavey and to student representative Mr Umair Shabbir in June 2026. Thanks to them all for their work on our committee over the past number of years, and a warm welcome to new members: Dr Laura Kehoe, Dr Ciara Goland, and Ms Katie Hynes. We look forward to having them all on the committee, and to working together over the coming years.

Welcome back, Professor Tom Hill!

Professor Tom Hill, a long time Irish Section member, has recently taken up a new Professorial role at Maynooth University, having spent 15 years of his career at Newcastle University. The Irish Section extends a warm welcome to him as he returns to Ireland, and we wish him every success in this next chapter. We are also excited that Maynooth will host a future Irish Section Summer meeting in the coming years.

The NutriPD BIG Nutrition Debate!

After the success of the February 2026 Big Nutrition Debate, hosted at the ATU Galway Campus, the next debate is scheduled to take place on 11 March 2027, hosted by SETU in Waterford. This free event is AfN accredited and is open to students, graduates, and professionals interested in advancing evidence-based practice in nutrition. We look forward to this exciting event.
