Association of Applied Nutrition in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s IV Forum: Diabetes from the Angle of Nutrition
The Association of Applied Nutrition in Bosnia and Herzegovina hosted the fourth Forum “Diabetes from the angle of nutrition”, on Diabetes Day, November 14, 2025, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body can not effectively use the insulin it makes. Diabetes facts and figures show the growing global diabetes burden for individuals, families and countries. The latest International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas (2025) reports that 11.1% – or 1 in 9 – of the adult population (20-79 years) is living with diabetes, with over 4 in 10 unaware that they have the condition.
By 2050, IDF projections show that 1 in 8 adults, approximately 853 million, will be living with diabetes, an increase of 46%. Over 90% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which is driven by socio-economic, demographic, environmental, and genetic factors.
As the annual event hosted by the Association of Applied Nutrition in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Minister of Health of Canton Sarajevo, dr.med. Enis Hasanovic was invited to greet the participants.
The Association of Applied Nutrition in Bosnia and Herzegovina also invited dr.sci. Sefkija Balic, specialist of Intern Medicine, subspecialist of Endocrinology and Diabetology, who spoke about European guidelines for dietary treatment of diabetics- evidence-based.
Twelve lectures were divided into 2 sessions: (1) Nutritional aspects of diabetes prevention, and (2) Multidisciplinary approach to diabetes treatment. Two workshops were also organised: (1) Diabetes Prevention from an Early Age and (2) Meal TO GO.
This event is the only event the Association of Applied Nutrition in Bosnia and Herzegovina is hosting from the very beginning since 2021. With it, the Association is able to share their vision: to spread awareness about the importance of proper nutrition, disease prevention, and a holistic approach.
